3 Tips for Dealing with Anxiety

No matter who you are, I can assume that at some point in your life you've been anxious about something - whether it be a test in school, job interview, or a big meeting coming up at work. It happens to all of us, and it's a horrible feeling. When I was younger, I would feel sick to my stomach about just going to my best friend's birthday party, get shaky about going to sports practice (not even games), and couldn't go anywhere in public without feeling uneasy. To this day, I occasionally still get anxious about a few (much larger) things, but I've definitely gotten SO much better. The countless amounts of Pinterest articles I read about how to deal with anxiety just weren't doing the trick, so I came up with my own solutions.




Face it head-on // No matter how hard you try to elude the fact that you're anxious about something, it doesn't work. Whenever I'm in the middle of a panicking situation, I think to myself about what I'm nervous about and why. For instance, I'm about to read an essay in front of 200 people, and I don't like public speaking, which is totally freaking me out. It really helps me to calm down when I know exactly what's causing my anxiety.


Focus on being happy // I'm 99% sure that none of you have ever heard someone tell you this when you're nervous, but I promise you I'm not crazy. If you think about it, when you're having a good time, you're so caught up in the moment that you're not stressing or worrying about anything. Whatever you have to do to make you happy and help you forget about what's causing you to feel so apprehensive, do it.


Steady your breathing // You've probably heard this one before, and I swear it works like magic. About four years ago, my mom taught me to breathe in through my nose for four seconds and exhale through my mouth for six seconds at least five times, and I still do it to this day. Taking the time to calm yourself and your breathing takes away the jitters and makes you feel more at ease.
